Japan Post to start deliveries by drones in April 2023 Japan Post unveiled a drone that it has been developing at an event in Tokyo. The vehicle is capable of carrying loads of up to five kilograms in weight and can fly about 35 kilometers. Japan Post says the drones will be able to make deliveries faster and cheaper. The Japanese government revised a law to allow for drone flights beyond the operator's line of sight over populated areas. But Japan Post says it plans to start introducing the vehicle in mountainous areas and on remote islands first, as it faces more severe worker shortages in those areas. SingPost and Lazada roll out self-service drop-off box for e-commerce parcels Singapore Post and e-commerce platform Lazada will be rolling out the newly announced POPDrop boxes for packages in April 2023. The boxes allow people to return products bought from Lazada in a more convenient and sustainable manner while also allow merchants to ship their items with end-to-end tracking capabilities through the use of radio frequency identification (RFID) and barcode scanners. It is part of a new deal between the two companies in adopting eco-friendly options. India’s Department of Posts Organizes Roundtable Conference on “Postal Services - a Tool for Global Socio-Economic Development and Connect” In the context of India’s presidency of the G20, the Department of Posts, Government of India, organized a Round Table Conference and Panel Discussion on the theme “Postal Services- a Tool for Global Socio-Economic Development and Connect”. The panel discussion, which was held in a hybrid format, was attended by dignitaries from the Universal Postal Union (UPU), Asian Pacific Postal Union (APPU), Department of Posts, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Postal Operators and Ministries representing G20 member countries, invitee countries and members of the APPU along with other stakeholders from the Postal sector. The event was held as a part of India’s National Philatelic Exhibition: “AMRITPEX 2023”. Further, panelists synergised on the idea of bringing the postal sector in the mainstream of G20 for a much bigger contribution that can be played by this sector through its connectivity, network & outreach. China Postal Airlines to operate B777Fs On 20 January 2023, the first B777F for China Postal Airlines took to the skies for the very first time. The Boeing is registered B-221X (67763) and the first flight was from Everett- Paine Field (Washington State, US) to Moses Lake (Washington State,USA) and back. In total, China Postal Airlines will receive two brand new B777Fs (the other being B-221Y, 67764), which it plans to operate on flights between Nanjing (CN) and Chicago (US) and Los Angeles (US). The duo also marks the introduction of the airline's first widebodies. Currently, the company is flying a fleet of seven B737-300Fs, eight B737-400Fs, seven B737-800Fs, and seven B757-200Fs. The company is mainly operating domestic flights but also flies to Japan and South Korea. |
China-Laos Railway Offers a New Choice for Cross-Border Mail Transport for Countries Along the Line The China-Laos Railway has opened up a new channel for mail transport. The freight trains on this line cover Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) members, such as China, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Vietnam, etc. China Post Group and Lao Post are currently exploring ways to enhance their cooperation in mail transport through the Railway. In addition, the Railway Departments of the countries are actively exploring new modes of international rail transport, such as “Lancang-Mekong Express + Cross Border E-commerce” and “China-Laos Railway + CR Express”, to improve the coverage and cross-border freight capacity of the line. The Railway offers a new choice for cross-border mail transport for countries along the line, especially LMC countries, and injects new impetus to the rapid development of regional trade. |
SingPost Equips Some Vehicles with Defibrillators; Drivers Get Training Singapore Post has equipped some of its vehicles with defibrillators as part of a Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) programme that gets first aid-trained drivers to quickly respond to cardiac arrest cases. SingPost joins Strides Taxi, Grab, ComfortDelGro, Ninja Van, private-hire drivers as well as other motorists who ply the roads with automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and are ready to be mobilised. Dak Karmayogi in India Post India Post joins ‘Mission Karmayogi’, a new experiment of its kind in the direction of capacity building of civil services launched by the Government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi. The Mission is envisioned to transform the Indian civil services capacity building landscape by establishing a robust digital ecosystem enabling continuous anytime- anywhere learning to make the officials future ready. In line with ‘Mission Karmayogi’, India Post has developed an in-house e-learning portal called ‘Dak Karmayogi’” and launched it in June last year for enhancing the competence and capacities of close to 450,000 of its postal human resources. The Dak Karmayogi portal enables the employee to access the uniform standardized training content online or in blended campus mode. This portal brings all the training content related to the work procedures of all cadres under one roof with essential soft skills to enable them to learn relevant subjects anytime, anywhere as per their convenience. Dak Kamayogi portal is a step forward to equip every employee with all the requisite competencies to realize the vision of India Post to be the customer’s first choice. Since the launch of the portal, a total of around 400,000 employees have completed the training successfully. Kudos to the leadership of India Post for conceptualizing and implementing such an ambitious capacity building project in a mission mode. Any postal employee can log into this user-friendly portal just with his Employee ID and other credentials and can have access to training content developed as per WTDET (Watch, Think, Do, Explore, Test) model. In addition to this, trainees can enhance their competencies with the help of a Digital Library equipped with over 7000 departmental orders, circulars, and SOPs. Videos are made available in 12 Indian languages in this portal to enable trainees to access training content in vernacular Indian languages from anywhere in the country. |
Thailand Post Launches Jumbo Delivery Service Thailand Post has launched EMS JUMBO, a new express delivery service to meet the growing demand for transporting larger and heavier items up to 200 kilograms. The service is available throughout the country and includes a reimbursement package for any losses or damage incurred during delivery. Customers can enjoy rates starting from 200-1,800 baht and purchase additional insurance for up to 200,000 baht reimbursement. Between 2020 and 2022, motorcycles, electric motorcycles, and refrigerators were among the most frequently delivered larger and heavier items. The trend towards buying larger items online has increased the demand for delivery series. EMS JUMBO can handle items of different types and sizes, including medication and cold chain products. Vanuatu Boosts Postal System Efficiency and Risk Management with New Customs Interface Vanuatu Post has linked its postal systems with Vanuatu Customs through the ASYHUB system to enable the real-time downloading of inbound and outbound postal consignments. The Single Window system is used to connect the Post CDS system with VeSW, allowing for easier communication and information exchange between Customs and Post. Vanuatu is the first country in the region and the fourth worldwide to establish such a system, which is expected to boost e-commerce and improve risk management. Vanuatu Post Limited staff have received training on the Customs Harmonized Coding system to ensure data integrity in the Customs system, and the Post unique tracking number is also electronically transferred to Customs to assist with service delivery to clients. The partnership between Post and Customs in Vanuatu has resulted in an innovative and efficient system that benefits both agencies and the customers. |
Afghan Post Partners with Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Enhance Social Services Afghan Post State Owned Enterprise is committed to playing an active role in improving social services and supporting the public’s social affairs. Iran National Post Utilizes Electric Motorcycles as a Part of its Green Post Approach Under an agreement signed among IRAN National Post Company, Tehran Municipality and a domestic manufacturer of electric motorcycles, the Iranian Postmen are going to receive around 3,000 electric motorcycles. In the first phase of the plan, a total of 50 electric motorcycles are assigned to Iran Post. Gas motorcycles mostly driven by carbureted engines are to blame for 18 percent of air pollution in Tehran. Implementation of a major plan to replace 700 gas motorcycles with the electric ones in the capital city of Tehran is expected to cut carbon emissions by nearly 1.5 million tonnes in the metropolis. Considering the effects of emissions, harmful gases and pollutants on health, making use of electric motors will not only lead to an increase in mental and physical health of the postmen, but also fuel savings, no noise and preserve the environment. |

Yamato and Japan Post announced tie-up for mailbox and small parcel deliveries Yamato Transport and Japan Post have announced their collaboration to address the impending “2024 problem,” which involves an anticipated shortage of truck drivers resulting from upcoming restrictions on overtime work. The companies intend to enhance delivery efficiency for small parcels and mailbox deliveries. Starting January 31, 2024, Yamato Transport’s direct-mail service, known as “Kuroneko DM-Bin,” will transition to “Kuroneko Yu-Mail” and utilize Japan Post’s “Yu-Mail” network. Furthermore, Yamato Transport plans to gradually replace its “Nekopos” small parcel deliveries with a similar service provided by Japan Post by March 31, 2025. Cambodia Post and Cambodia Customs sign MoU to improve cross-border e-commerce efficiency and security In line with the renewed WCO–UPU cooperation agreement and the Royal Government of Cambodia’s policy to facilitate and improve quality and security for cross-border e- commerce, Cambodia Post and General Department of Customs and Excise, on June 30 2023, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to facilitate the exchange of Electronic Advance Data (EAD) between Cambodia Post’s Customs Declaration System (CDS) and Customs’s ASYCUDA. The MoU is signed after the successful interfacing of the two systems with the support of UPU and the Cambodia Ministry of Commerce (MoC). Both parties committed to a continued cooperation between Customs and Posts to tackle challenges and opportunities for cross-border e-commerce. India Post and Canada Post join hands to facilitate e-commerce India Post and Canada Post have signed an agreement to launch a new service for e- commerce exporters. The service, called International Tracked Packet service (ITPS), will offer a fast and affordable way to ship packets up to 2kg between the two countries. India’s first 3D-printed post office inaugurated in Bengaluru India’s first post office constructed using 3D printing technology was inaugurated in Bengaluru on August 20. The building, located at Cambridge Layout in Ulsoor, was built by Larsen & Toubro in collaboration with the postal department. The 1,021 sqft post office has a modern design and can withstand natural calamities. The postal department plans to construct more post offices using 3D printing technology in 400 locations where postal services are not accessible. The department has also engaged a technical expert from IIT-Madras to monitor the quality of the building. The 3D-printed post office is expected to boost the trade and economy of the region and cater to the needs of both the retailers and the consumers. Australia delivers the Pacific Postal Development Partnership The Pacific Postal Development Partnership (PPDP) announced at the APPU Congress in August 2022 has hit a major milestone with its first activities being delivered by Australia in partnership with Pacific Island countries. 10 shipping containers of equipment are being delivered to the Solomon Islands, Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea, including motorbikes, electric delivery vehicles, and IT equipment. The Hon Michelle Rowland MP, Australian Minister for Communications, attended the first delivery ceremony in Honiara on 24 August 2023, alongside her Solomon Islands counterpart, the Hon Peter Shanel Agovaka. A similar event was also held in Nuku'alofa on 31 August 2023, attended by Tongan Prime Minister Hon Hu’akavameiliku, as well as in Suva, Fiji on 5 September, attended by Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister's Office, Hon Sakiusa Tubuna. Further events will be held across the Pacific in coming weeks. Examples of equipment being delivered include: mail sorting and handling equipment, IT equipment, delivery vehicles and safety gear. The PPDP will improve mail processing reliability, speed and safety, allowing for increased e-commerce business opportunities and better connectivity with family and friends. Macao Post launches “ePosting” automated mail posting service The Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau (CTT) is set to unveil its innovative “ePosting” automated mail posting service on October 9, 2023. This service will initially debut with two self-service posting kiosks, operating around the clock. Singpost and FedEx partner to pilot drop-off points at post offices SingPost and FedEx have signed a MOU to trial a new service that allows FedEx customers to drop off their parcels at selected post offices in Singapore. The service aims to improve operational efficiency and customer convenience for cross-border shipments. The trial will last for three months and will involve six post offices with POPStop counters, which are dedicated facilities for eCommerce parcel transactions. SingPost and FedEx hope that this collaboration will enhance their competitive edge and facilitate greater cross-border trade. The MOU is effective as of September 25, 2023.
